World Cup Stages
A World Cup Series has been organized since 1990. Each year between 4 and 6 World Cup competitions are organized. At the end of these competitions there is a World Cup Final for which the best 36 athletes participate. The UIPM considers the athlete’s three best World Cup Competitions as a qualifying criterion.
In 2009 there are 4 World Cup competitions:
| World Cup #1 |
Mexico City, México |
24-29 March |
| World Cup #2 |
Cairo, Egypt |
16-19 April |
| World Cup #3 |
Budapeste and Szekesfehervar, Hungary |
7-10 May/14-17 May |
| World Cup #4 |
Rome, Italy |
20-25 May |
| World Cup Final |
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil |
2009 |
In early February, the President of the UIPM, Dr. Klaus Schormann visited Brazil to meet with the Competition’s Organizing Committee and the Brazilian Confederation of Modern Pentathlon. He analyzed the planning and visited the facilities at Complexo Desportivo Deodoro. Since Rio de Janeiro is one of the cities competing to host the 2016 Olympic Games, President Schormann also met with organizers to discuss the infra-structure to be built to successfully hold the Modern Pentathlon events. Rio de Janeiro is under great pressure in holding the Pentathlon World Cup Final, since this will be the last international competition the city will host before COI makes their decision as to which city will host the 2016 Olympic Games.
